Lady Mary Crawley, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?
12 Days of Mary and Matthew: Day 10: Best Episode
This episode not only had the most romantic three minutes in television history (not even hyperbole, I firmly believe this is true) it also had 87 other minutes that were frankly amazing as well.
I think what was great about this episode was how much it focused on Matthew’s emotional journey. So much of season 2 was about Mary-how much she was struggling with her feelings for him in the wake of WW1 and both their engagements, her attempts to get on with her life and the like…but what Matthew was thinking was often frustratingly unclear. Was he blind to his own feelings for her, or had he truly moved on? What was going on in his head between Violet telling him Mary was still in love with him and the dance/kiss in 2x08? How much about his previous relationship with Mary did Lavinia really know?
As if it wasn’t already painfully obvious, the Christmas Special showed us just why Matthew and Mary are perfect for each other. Matthew, over the course of this episode, figured out what the audience had been screaming at him from their living rooms since September. He couldn’t stand seeing her unhappy, she makes him laugh, she’s a storm braver, he’s so glad she’s here, she’s lived her life and he’s lived his…and now it’s time they lived them together.
She would stay if you asked her to.
And then he did.
